Moss Piglet – an Extract

moss piglet coverDelicately and making as little noise as possible, Brendan stepped inside. As his eyes adjusted, the darkness slowly transformed into low light and he was able to make out some of the interior. The walls seemed to be fashioned from wooden planks fastened to vertical columns. He reached down to touch the floor and it felt like dry earth. A fire burned in the centre of the room and while some smoke escaped through a gap in the roof, much flowed around him. It was as well Brendan was simply a projection of himself. If he were there in person he’d probably be coughing like mad.

He stepped further into the room and, though he could make out objects around him, the smoke created a murky mist through which only rough shadows and outlines could be discerned. One of these shadows looked human, causing him to start. He peered into the smoke trying to get a better look. It looked feminine, but it was hard to tell. That said, the outline was becoming clearer. It took a few moments for him to realise that this was because it was moving towards him. The shape radiated danger and he felt suddenly afraid. He took a step back and laid a worried hand on Pegasus’ neck. ‘I think we should go,’ he whispered into his ear.

Everything started to fade except for two green spots of light that glowed with ferocious intensity. Her eyes. She was looking right at him.

Brendan opened his eyes with a start. He was back in the present but it took him a few moments to orientate himself. Although they were no longer with him, he thanked Pegasus and his panther before standing up slowly and stretching his back. He looked thoughtfully at the chair as if it had answers. He could still feel those two green eyes boring into him. He’d not had an experience like this before; normally, he had to make himself known and work quite hard to get an entity’s attention. But this woman had not only been looking right at him, she had been coming at him with an intensity that he had found frightening.

Doubts began to creep in and he wondered if he’d imagined it all, a thought that made him smile wryly. No, it had felt real and, further, there was some link between the green-eyed woman and the problems with this house. Brendan now knew that this was not going to be a simple, one visit fix. There was something going on here, but he was not sure what. He would also have to be careful. There was something very disturbing about that green-eyed woman.
